Keeping the till running

A lost connection shouldn't stop a shop from making a sale. That's a central constraint behind Qovah, the point-of-sale platform at Qovah Technologies.

The product brings sales, inventory, staff access and payments together, alongside online storefronts. The desktop till supports macOS, Windows and Linux. A browser till provides another way to sell, including offline support.

How it fits together

I use Rust and GPUI for the desktop application, and TypeScript with TanStack Start for the web applications. Convex handles the cloud backend, with Better Auth for authentication.

Desktop and web need to agree on business rules. The TypeScript applications share those rules directly, while shared JSON fixtures check the Rust and cloud contracts against the same examples.

Much of the work happens around interrupted connections, synchronization and payments. A sale needs a dependable path from the till to the cloud, and a retry needs to preserve the original transaction. Those constraints shape the implementation and the checks around each release.
